As part of planned emergency training, the hospital will hold in-house pandemic training this week that includes setting up an Incident Command Center like it did for Friday’s earthquake. The hospital also participates in a pandemic exercise from 8 a.m. As part of that exercise, the community can get free flu shots. Some Anchorage hospitals reported issues with water supply from pipes breaking, but staffing and beds are fine, she said. Here are some important facts about state-maintained bridges and what you can expect from our staff as southcentral Alaska continues to recover from the latest quake. All available DOT&PF bridge inspectors are in Southcentral Alaska and are conducting technical bridge inspections on 243 bridges in the earthquake-affected area. Some of those repairs may need to happen immediately and some may happen over the course of several years. Due to ongoing earthquake recovery efforts, public safety and transportation officials are requesting that Alaskans avoid the area of Vine Road that suffered significant damage during Friday’s Earthquake. Engineers and public safety officials are assessing the damage to the area, and unstable ground may put the public at risk. While it’s tempting to take selfies and explore, doing so is unsafe and inhibits the ability of officials to address the situation.

A fault dipping at 29° towards the east gives the best match to the observed seismic waveforms. The depth and mechanism are consistent with faulting within the down-going Pacific Plate. This implies that the earthquake was an intraslab earthquake within that plate, rather than at the plate boundary between the Pacific and North American Plates beneath the Anchorage area.
The National Weather Service and Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially issued a tsunami watch for Hawaii and the entire West Coast, but cancelled them after less than two hours. When earthquakes do occur, rapid reporting allows the public and emergency managers to assess the potential impacts.

Some of these damaged locations have already been repaired and some are scheduled to be repaired in the future. All bridges have been inspected by DOT&PF engineers and have been determined safe for travel. The Alaska Earthquake Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks is a regional seismic network that participates in the USGS Advanced National Seismic System. AEC contributes seismic monitoring data and conducts analyses that are used in characterizing the 2018 Anchorage earthquake and its aftershocks.
Though volcanic activity causes only a small proportion of Alaska's earthquakes, these earthquakes often warrant more detailed analysis. Ten-hour seismograms from a seismic station on Atka Island on August 6 & 7, 2008. The sudden appearance of numerous earthquakes was an early sign of an eruption that began later in the day on August 7. Not all swarms of earthquakes indicate eruptions; but nearly all eruptions are preceded by vigorous seismic activity. The Alaska Earthquake Center exists to minimize our risks by understanding where earthquakes occur and why. Tracking the earthquakes that occur each day provides clues about the earthquakes that are likely in the future.
